June - August 2014

Led a distribution study for a large food retailer to identify significant distribution savings utilizing an innovative approach to optimize the handling and delivery costs within the cold chain.   The study focused on developing the proper protocols to ensure temperature variability throughout the cold chain was minimized and high product quality was maintained while at the same time consolidating product distribution requiring different temperature thresholds.


May 2014 - Current

Developed a distribution strategy for a high growth specialty food brand for a new geographic region of the U.S.  Identified and selected distribution partners and created a cost modeling tool to simulate impacts of various demand forecasts and strategic operational variability.  Provided implementation guidance of the strategy. The distribution strategy designed projected more than $1 million of cost savings over initial planned costs.


December 2013 - Current

Conducted a transportation optimization project for a large paper products manufacturer and distributor as well as 3PL selection and implementation across multiple divisions.


October 2013 - November 2013

Conducted an operational assessment for an investor of a rail start-up company focused on cold chain distribution from the port to company operated distribution facilities.


September 2013

Completed an assessment for a large east coast food processor/distributor company.  Assessed the cold chain integrity and operating controls from the receiving of product through distribution to the customer.

Performed a cold chain assessment of a food retailer’s distribution and store operations in Florida.

  • Sterling implemented the pilot study for a major food retailer of custom design assessment tool to identify cold chain risks, potential customer issues and potential food safety risks at retail stores throughout the chain.

  • Sterling introduced a China-based company "The Place" to 22 industry leaders in food retailing, food distribution, retail design, building construction and product development to obtain successful business models and how they can be applied to their business strategy.  The work included an intensive tour around the US to visit these industry leaders and their "best in class" operations.
  • Sterling conducted an assessment of the quality of produce by thermal mapping through the supplier, distribution and retail network.

Performed an implementation review for the launch of Florida-based distribution operations of large convenience store chain operator.

June 2012 

  • Performed a distribution network optimization study for a national home improvement products manufacturer with multiple plants and distribution centers throughout the North America.  Identified alternative networks for distribution which would significantly increase service while also decreasing distribution costs.  
  • Developed a predictive modeling assessment for a multi-million dollar food retailer.  Determined the capabilities of various key operating indicators to identify predictive results as express through satisfactory statistical conclusions.

April 2012

Sterling Solutions was awarded a project to develop savings initiatives for a customer facing logistics program of a large national specialty food company for its wholesale channel.

January 2012

  • Sterling has been awarded an additional contract with a major food manufacturer in managing the implementation process of a production expansion for a new product line.This includes assistance with planning, equipment sourcing, line layout, production ramp-up and management oversight.
  • Nick Pacitti and David Sterling taught a four day Cold Chain Management course at the Georgia Tech Supply Chain and Logistics Institute from January 23rd through January 26th.

December 2011

  • Sterling is working with a national supplier of sealant and waterproofing materials to develop a SKU Rationalization Model to decrease overall inventory and ineffective SKU deployment.
  • Sterlingcompleted the distribution assessment for a major elevator manufacturer and service provider.  Recommendations included the identification of opportunities resulting in significant levels of savings, ranging up to greater than 15% of logistics costs.

Sterling is working with a 10,000 store food chain in developing a "fast food" strategy in growing their foodservice sales.  Currently the foodservice segment represents a low percentage of their current sales.  In knowing that foodservice margins can typically represent half or more of store profitability this chain is aggressively working toward a complete sales, marketing, production and merchandising strategy. Sterling will be part of their solution in leading the process.

Sterling has partnered with Emcien and their Pattern Based Analytics application in assisting our customers in new ways of looking at correlation of and between items and how they behave by order, by season, by day and even by hour.  Pattern Based Analytics have huge benefits on replenishment strategies, inventory levels and increased sales.

Sterling has completed an inventory optimization pilot assessment for a major U.S. based medical device company with a product line of over 50,000 items. Sterling has also completed a similar project for a building materials company with the ability to improve sales through up-selling products based on seasonality.

  • Two of Sterling Solutions clients have been awarded a top food logistics innovator award and the Golden Pallet Award.  Wawa Food Market, a long standing client with Sterling has been awarded the Top Food Logistics Innovator Award 2009 for their research and application of cold chain methodology that was partly developed by Sterling.  McLane New Jersey was awarded the Golden Pallet Award for their highly efficient approach to multi-temperature distribution.

  • Wawa Food Markets, a long term client has been awarded the Food Logistics Innovator award due to its far reaching leadership in cold chain management.  Sterling played and continues to play a major role in developing Wawa's cold chain capabilities.  Look in the June edition of Food Logistics Magazine for the feature article.

Sterling has been awarded an optimization project with a global confectionery manufacturer improving its NA distribution operations.

February 2009- Sterling Solutions has completed the process of becoming a registered Government Contractor.

March 2008 - May 2009- Sterling Solutions co-chairs the SQF Food Logistics Technical Advisory Committee.  Through the food logistics committee and its members, Sterling is structuring guidance for safe quality food practices in the logistics industry.  This is done in response to advances in science and technology, the needs of the food industry and to changes in the food regulations.
